  • 3. May 14, 2011-- WORLD PREMIERE OF " VILLA-LOBOS REMIX" AT SYMPHONY SPACE WITH BRAZILIAN ELECTRONC GROUP XPLAU AND GRAMMY WINNER PIANIST SONIA RUBINSKY

  • WALL TO WALL, the free-admission celebration of Spring, will feature a unique concert with Brazilian- based XPLAU and celebrated pianist Sonia Rubinsky, with the support of the Colorado Quartet, as part of SONIDOS, the series that is the highlight of the 2010/11 season at the Symphony Space.

The presentation will take place on May 14, 2011, and will display a selection of the Villa-Lobos canon. As an extra-added attraction, the Colorado Quartet, the string ensemble already known to Symphony Space audiences, will join in the provocative sounds of XPLAU and the inspirational intensity of Sonia Rubinsky´s piano.

Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887/1959) is best remembered for his Bachianas Brasileiras, nine orchestral pieces, of which, # 5 is among the most beloved music of the Twentieth Century.
XPLAU is an art collective that includes musicians, DJ´s and VJ´s creating electronic audiovisual pieces, sound mosaics inspired by the work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi in his beloved Barcelona, blending classical music with Brazilian rhythms. It is the brainchild of Brazilian-born Antonio Sartori, an international basketball player turned musician.

XPLAU´s first encounter with Villa-Lobos music took place in 2009 at the National Archive in Rio de Janeiro, during "VIVA VILLA!" a crowd-pleaser exhibit that is traveling in Brazil.
In 2010, XPLAU was invited to play its unusual mixes, electronic beats, strings and rare footage of the Maestro Villa-Lobos at the annual Culture Awards given by the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Sonia Rubinsky, winner of the 2009 Latin Grammy award for Best Classical Record of the Year, studied piano at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and The Juilliard School in New York. A worldwide acclaimed soloist, she was first spotted by Arthur Rubinstein. She recorded the complete piano work of Villa-Lobos for NAXOS.

SONIDOS is a celebration of Latino music, exploring Latin culture through music, literature, theatre, dance and film.
