- Villa-Lobos & Friends: Bach and Mendelssohn
Sonia Rubinsky, piano
- Even 50 years after his death, Villa-Lobos remains uncharted territory: his belief in the inherent and fundamental link between Brazilian folklore and the music of Bach are revealed in this programme in a new way, and his belief in the universality of Brazilian folk songs is explored side by side with some of Mendelssohn's alluring Songs Without Words. The programme ends with the Brazilian Cycle, a Villa-Lobos tour-de-force of inventiveness, lyricism and virtuosity.
Programme:
Bach – Ricercar a Tre from the Musical Offering
Mendelssohn – Songs Without Words op. 19 no. 1-6
Villa-Lobos – Bachianas Brasileiras no. 4

- January 18th, 2010 at 4:00 pm Salle Olivier Messiaen:
Concert to be broadcast on France Musique--
This was a recital in commemoration of 50 years of Villa-Lobos' death. In the program: New York Skyline Melody, 4 pieces from Cirandas, Bachianas Brasileiras #4, Hommage à Chopin and the Rudepoema.
It was an honor to play at Salle Olivier Messiaen. I chose a program which shows the many and different facets of Villa-Lobos. The most well-known being the Bachianas Brasileiras #4. Skyline Melody and the Rudepoema show a very daring and modern composer, and the four pieces from Cirandas are gems. By way of contrast, the romanticism of Hommage à Chopin may surprise the listener.
